Mobile has, without any doubt, completely altered the way we consume entertainment. Online streaming services are driving our need for entertainment, but what has remained constant is the appeal of good content. And this is true for movies too. A good movie is worth every minute of the time spent watching it. And thankfully, the year 2019 has given us a whole bunch of them. As the year finally comes to an end, we thought why not bring you the list of top 10 must-watch movies of 2019. Here it goes:

1. The Irishman

This movie about a World War II veteran recounting his association with a local gangster from the Philadelphia crime family is a true Scorsese masterpiece. With powerful performances from Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, the movie explores Russell Bufalino’s business ties with politicians & gangsters and has all the ingredients of a Scorsese classic.

2. Chernobyl

Chernobyl is a true eye-opener. Based on the Ukrainian nuclear plant disaster of April 1986, the movie is a detailed account of the events that lead to the disaster and the aftermath. The movie stars Jared Harris and Emily Watson who deliver impeccable performances.

3. The Lighthouse

Isolation is a precursor to sanity, this is the recurring theme of this masterpiece from Robert Eggers. The movie is set in the 1890s and tells the story of two lighthouse keepers who live on a remote and mysterious New England island. Made on a modest budget of $4 million, the movie is gripping, unsettling and haunting. 

4. Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This french historical drama could be the best movie that you have seen for a long time. The film scores an A+ in all departments and as one reviewer puts it “The movie sees into souls.”

The movie is about a mutual attraction between a French countess and the female artist who is commissioned to paint the former’s wedding portrait. Written and directed by Céline Sciamma, the movie has been touted as the frontrunner for all popular awards.

5. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Another gem from Quentin Tarantino universe, the movie is a tale of two, one time successful but now struggling, Hollywood actors played by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DI Caprio. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the movie is an extensive yet humorous account of the final years of the so-called Hollywood’s golden age.

6. Burning

Burning is puzzling, intelligent and thoroughly mesmerizing. The movie tells the riveting story of Jong-soo who by chance bumps into Hae-mi, her one-time neighbor. Jong-soo asks Hae-mi to look after her cat while on a trip to Africa. But Hae-mi is surprised to find that Jong-soo has a new mysterious friend Ben in her life whom she met during her travels. One of the primary contenders for this year’s Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category, Burning is a slow yet engaging portrayal of how the current generation is persistently troubled by economic desperation.

7. Marriage Story

Marriage Story is a 2019 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Noah Baumbach. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver and tells the story of couples Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) Barber who are trying to force an amicable divorce and in the process cause as little harm as possible for their young son Henry.

8. Apollo 11

What did it take to land the first man on the surface of the Moon? Apollo uncovers the mysteries and stories that have long been associated with the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. Directed by Todd Douglas Miller, the movie is a visual treat filled with never-before-seen footage and audio recordings of NASA’s most celebrated mission.

9. The Farewell

A Chinese family finds out that their grandmother’s days are numbered. To hide the news from her and say their last goodbyes, the family decides to organize a fake wedding. Directed by Lulu Wang, Farewell is a masterpiece in every frame. It is funny, emotional and deeply moving. The movie also perfectly captures Chinese culture and philosophy offering a unique and poignant cinematic experience.

10. Avengers EndGame

Oh Yes! How can we forget Avengers Endgame? The movie that broke all box office records this year. Since its release, the movie has made $2.7902bn. It is now the most popular and highest-grossing Hollywood movie of all time. A culmination of 10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the movie is both a tribute and a dedication to the MCU fanbase.

The year 2019 was no doubt a cinematic stew for movie lovers.
